Ryan Johnstone


 
Ryan Johnstone is in currently director of the Aledo Middle School Band program in Aledo, Texas. Previously, Mr. Johnstone was an Associate Director at Aledo High School for 3 years. Mr. Johnstone began teaching six years ago after graduating from Yale University (CT) with a Masters in Music Performance. His bands at Aledo High School earned sweepstakes at UIL and invitational festivals all three years.   He has served as guest conductor and clinician for various musical organizations around the Dallas/Ft. Worth area.

As a performing orchestral musician (trombone), Mr. Johnstone has performed with some of the most sought after symphonic conductors, including Sir Simon Rattle, Christoph von Dohnányi, David Zinman, Charles Dutoit, James Levine, and Yuri Temirkanov. Mr. Johnstone has also helped initiate new music commissions, including Eric Ewazen’s trombone quartet, Myths and Legends. He has played with various professional ensembles in the northeast and held the position of section trombone with the Haddonfield (NJ) Symphony (now known as Symphony in C). He also served as principal trombone of the Curtis Symphony Orchestra and Yale Philharmonia and has performed with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra in Carnegie Hall. He has also been a member of numerous chamber ensembles including The Rittenhouse Trombone Quartet, Nyxas Trombone Quartet, Broad Street Brass Quintet, Axiom Brass Quintet (Yale), and the Texas Trombone Octet, winner of the International Trombone Association’s Emory Remington Trombone Choir Competition in 2002.   In 2009, Mr. Johnstone commissioned John B. Hedges, future composer in residence for the Ft. Worth Symphony, to write a new work for band.   His middle school Honor Winds premiered this piece in December 2010.

In addition to his graduate degree from Yale, Mr. Johnstone holds a Bachelor or Music Performance from the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, PA. Prior to his time at Curtis, he was also a student at Southern Methodist University for two years. His primary teachers include Jimmy Clark (Principal Trombone of the Dallas Opera and Dallas Wind Symphony), John Kitzman (Principal Trombone of the Dallas Symphony), Nitzan Haroz (Principal Trombone of the Philadelphia Orchestra), and Scott Hartman (Renowned Soloist and Chamber Musician).

Mr. Johnstone is excited to be rejoining the Crossmen staff and is looking forward to a great second year with the corps!
