Meet the 2013 Visual Team
"The Crossmen visual team has been hard at work since prior to the Crossmen eXperience Camps in November," stated Executive Director, Fred Morrison. "Ed Devlin and Brad Slusarczyk assembled a great mix of teachers for the 2013 season and beyond. Brad has added something new for the Crossmen in 2013. We are starting our future staff in training initiative by adding two visual interns to the staff this year."
It is time to introduce the visual team. They include:
Brad Slusarczyk – Caption Head
Brad Slusarczyk is an active drill writer, music educator, pageantry consultant, clinician and marching adjudicator. He is very enthusiastic about leading the Crossmen’s visual caption for the 2013 season.
Brad began his musical career marching tuba with Carolina Crown Drum and Bugle corps in 2003. He continued with Crown for the seasons of 2004 and 2005. In the spring of 2006 he began performing with the University of North Carolina – Greensboro’s Wind Ensemble where he served as the principal tubist for three years. During the summer of 2006 he competed at the International Tuba and Euphonium Conference (Denver, CO) he was a finalist in the Youth Artist Solo Tuba Division, placing 3 rd, and a soloist with the Collegiate All-Star Tuba Ensemble. In the winter of 2007 Brad competed at the South Eastern Regional Tuba and Euphonium Conference (Cullowhee, NC) and was a finalist in the Solo Tuba Division, placing 3 rd. In 2008, Brad returned to drum corps and performed with the Santa Clara Vanguard. The summer of 2009 he aged-out with the Drum Corps International fifteen-time world champions, the Concord Blue Devils.
Brad has worked with numerous successful programs along the east coast from Virginia to Florida. Brad taught with the Spirit of Atlanta in 2010, and continued on their staff in 2011 when they made it back into DCI finals. He is also a music and visual consultant for the 2012 DCA Class A Champions – Carolina Gold. Brad is currently the visual coordinator for the South Carolina State Finalist Band, the South Pointe High School Band of Thunder in Rock Hill, SC.
Continuing to be an avid tubist, Brad has performed with the Triangle Brass Band, UNCG Symphony Orchestra, the UNCG TubaBand, the UNCG Symphonic Band, Mnemonic Device the tuba quartet, Big Dixie the Dixieland Band, New Garden Brass, the UNCG Chamber Winds, and the Fibonacci Chamber Orchestra.
Brad studied Music Performance – Tuba at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Brad and his wife Jessica currently reside in Charlotte, NC. In his free time he enjoys cycling, running, and playing with his two dogs, Lexi and Koey
Carlos Gonzalez – Assistant Caption Head
Carlos Gonzalez is currently the visual coordinator/caption head for the Georgia State University marching band in Atlanta, Ga. The band was started in 2010, and in a very short time has grown to over 200 students. Carlos is also the visual caption head for the perennial DCA finalists Atlanta Corpsvets Senior Drum and Bugle Corps, and Bands of America Regional finalists McEachern High School.
Carlos spent three years marching as a soprano for the Glassmen Drum and Bugle Corps from Toledo, Ohio. After aging out, he spent the next summer on the instructional staff with the Bluecoats Drum and Bugle Corps. This was followed by two years on staff at Carolina Crown, and three years on staff with the 6-time DCI champion Santa Clara Vanguard. In 2010, Carlos joined the instructional staff for the Spirit of Atlanta Drum and Bugle Corps as visual caption head, and in 2011 Spirit of Atlanta made DCI finals for the first time since 2007. He is extremely excited to be joining the Crossmen visual staff for the 2013 season as Assistant Visual Caption head.
Some of the other groups Carlos has had the opportunity to work with include: 3 time Grand National Champion Plymouth Canton Education Park High School, 2004 Grand National runner up Kennesaw Mountain High School, 2010 Akron and Jacksonville Bands of America champion Carlton J. Kell High School, Walton High School, and Westbloomfield High School.
Carlos currently works at Regions bank and lives in Acworth, Ga with his lovely girlfriend Alexis. He is finishing up his double major Bachelors degree in Risk Management and Finance at Georgia State University. He enjoys a busy schedule consulting, adjudicating and drill writing for many High School bands across the Southeast.
Josh began his drum corps career marching trumpet with the Magic of Orlando Drum and Bugle Corps 2004 and 2005, then with The Cadets Drum and Bugle Corps in 2006 and 2007-ageout (DCI silver medalist). He later returned to the Drum Corps scene spending the 2011 season on visual staff with Teal Sound Drum and Bugle Corps.
Josh has been working with South Florida programs since 2004, high school marching bands such as Coral Springs, John I Leonard, Seminole Ridge, Jupiter, Coral Glades, Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, and Park Vista High School. All of his groups under his instruction won many accolades and reached finals at FMBC States Competition. His responsibilities have ranged from Visual Caption Head, Music Caption Head, and Show Coordination. In 2010 he worked with the visual design of John I Leonard Indoor Percussion where they received 2nd Place in their respective class at SFWGA championships.
Josh began expanding in his indoor experience when joining the visual staff of Stryke Percussion Ensemble for the 2012 season. They finished 13th at WGI independent World Class Finals in Dayton Ohio. It was Stryke's debut in World Class. Josh returns to Stryke for the 2013 season as the Visual Caption Head.
Richard is in his tenth year as a music educator, currently serving as Associate Director of Bands at Waller High School near Houston Texas. He earned his Bachelor of Music in Education from the Conservatory of Music at Capital University in Columbus Ohio, and a Master of Music in Education from the University of Texas at San Antonio. While at UTSA he held the positions of Conducting Associate for the Wind Ensemble, and Graduate Assistant for the Athletic Bands. Richard is an alumnus of the Bluecoats Drum and Bugle Corps, and has been a staff member for Spirit of Atlanta
Tim Heichelheim currently serves as the Visual Director of Westview High School in Beaverton, Oregon. Starting his drum corps experience in the Seattle Cascades in 2004, he continued with them through the ‘06 season. In 2007 Tim joined the Santa Clara Vanguard euphonium line, and marched through his age-out in 2009. In 2010, Tim joined the Spirit of Atlanta visual staff and served there through the 2011 season. Aside from his current position at Westview High-School, he has written drill for, taught, and consulted at many of the high schools in the Portland Metro area.
Tim has performed with many groups around the Portland area. As well as performing as a freelance trombone player, he is currently performing with the Festival Brass. Graduating from Portland State University with a Bachelor degree in Music Education in 2012, Tim is currently working towards his Masters degree in Education, continuing his attendance at PSU.
Trey’s involvement with drum corps began in 2006 with Spirit of Atlanta. He continued to march with SOA for six years, where he served as a member of the baritone/euphonium line (’06-’10) and drum major for the 2011 season. Trey has previously taught with the Teal Sound Drum & Bugle Corps and the Colts Drum & Bugle Corps. Remaining an active clinician and educator in the greater Atlanta area, he has worked with various high schools including BOA Finalist Ola High School and Woodland High School. Trey currently attends Georgia State University where he is finishing his bachelor’s degree in Business with a concentration in Marketing. This will be Trey’s first year on staff with the Crossmen and is very excited for the 2013 season.
Adam Chrobak started marching contra with the Santa Clara Vanguard in 2007, and marched 5 years until his age-out in 2011. He studied music education at Sam Houston State University, and currently attends the University of Houston, studying Exercise Science/Pre-Physical Therapy. Adam has been a visual technician at The Woodlands High School.
Matt White (Intern)
Matt started his drum corps career in 2008 with the Spirit of Atlanta. He returned to Spirit for the 2009, 2010 seasons, and aged out with The Crossmen in 2012. Matt is currently pursuing a degree in Music Education at Calhoun Community College in Decatur, Alabama.
Devon performed with the Spirit of Atlanta for four years, three on trumpet (’08, ’10-’11), and lead the corps as Drum Major in 2012. She is currently studying Music Education at the University of Georgia where she was a member of the Redcoat Marching Band.
"It has already been a great pleasure working with our 2013 visual staff, stated Assistant Corps Director Joe Banegas. They have upped the performance bar and expectation for the members from the very first camp." We can't wait to see the product of their efforts during the 2013 DCI Summer Tour.
