Kara (Hoeflinger) Alvarez-Calderon

Ms. Kara Alvarez-Calderon is in her fifth year of teaching in the Texas public schools and currently serving her first year as an Associate Band Director at Mountain Valley Middle School in Canyon Lake, TX. Prior to this year, Kara was an Associate Band Director at Creekview High School in Carrollton, Texas where her concert bands have received exclusively 1st Division ratings at UIL Concert and Sight-Reading Contest each year.   She also taught beginning horn classes at Blalack Middle School and coordinated the visual aspects for the marching band.

Kara is a Music Education cum laude graduate of Baylor University where she played French horn in the top Wind Ensemble and Orchestra for three years. She was very active with the BU Golden Wave Marching Band where she served as drum major for two years and hired as a student staff member for one. Her duties as a staff member included organizing and teaching marching fundamentals, writing and teaching drill, leading sectionals and coordinating the high school recruitment program.

She also comes to us from Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps where she marched mellophone in 2003 and served as conductor in 2004. During that time, she received the 2004 Jim Jones Leadership Award for being DCI’s drum major of the year. She is an active conducting and leadership clinician across the country and has taught several drum major camps including the University of Texas Arlington Drum Major Camp and the Spirit of Atlanta Drum Major Camp at Jackson State University.    She is also a clinician for the DCI Drum Major Clinic in Indianapolis, IN. The year 2011 will be Kara’s second season teaching brass and leadership skills with the Crossmen. The Crossmen are happy to welcome Kara’s return to the brass staff.
