Crossmen Food Truck Repairs & Improvements

Posted by Evan Woods on 3/3/2010

Volunteer Help Needed In Houston
March 6 - March 20

The Crossmen food trailer has served over 600,000 meals to the corps over the last 12 years.  Before the Crossmen outfitted the trailer as a commercial kitchen, it was an equipment hauler for the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra.  Some essential repairs and a few improvements are necessary for the food crew to effectively feed the 2010 Crossmen members, staff, and volunteers.

Two friends and volunteers of the Crossmen, Thom Martin and Denise Hammond, have agreed to house the food trailer at Thom's car shop in northwest Houston for the month of March.  They will lead the repairs and improvements in the following areas:
  • Repair rotting places in wood floor.  Cover with aluminum flooring and new rubber mats.
  • Essential repairs will be made to plumbing and electrical fixtures.
  • Improvements will be made to exterior storage doors and bays for safety and functionality.

Here are the dates we need the most volunteer workers.  Please bring friends or neighbors.  There will be lots to do!  We would also love to have volunteers who provide food and refreshments! Contact Evan Woods at volunteers@crossmen.org if you can help during these times.
  • Saturday, March 6, starting at 9AM and going as late as needed
  • Friday, March 12  through Saturday, March 20, anytime
Location is at the auto shop of Thom Martin, at 12002 Tomball Parkway in northwest Houston.

If we are able to acquire additional equipment through donations, we will pursue further improvements to the truck such as:
  • Install new on-demand hot water heater
  • Replace 8 feet of laminate countertop with stainless steel
  • Replace gas hot-plate burners
  • Add overhead storage above the new countertop and burners
  • Replace the generator with a commercial grade diesel generator (already funded in part by a grant)
If you have any resources to find quality used restaurant equipment or fixtures, please contact Evan to find out the specifications of what will work in the food trailer.

Please consider donating money or materials through the Crossmen Wishlist for this project.

Thanks to the following people who have already contributed generously to the Food Truck Project:
JB & Sherrie Morace, parents of Crossmen baritone player Bret Morace
Dave and Evie Sears, parents of Crossmen baritone player Josh Sears

If you have any questions or would like to volunteer, contact Evan Woods at volunteers@crossmen.org.
