2013 Crossmen Protest Tour
Day 51, Friday, August 2ndWe pulled into our West Essex housing site on time after rolling down essentially the same roads we did the night before. The saving grace is that we don't have to travel as far. West Essex puts us about 90 minutes out of Allentown close to the PA border with New Jersey. The facilities here are good. We have three fields with a stadium to prepare for the Allentown regional. We had some sprinkles to light showers in the morning but it cleared by lunch. The stadium lights were programmed to go off at ten so we had a hard stop at 9:45. We were all shocked when the stadium went dark at precisely 9:30 pm in the middle of a rep! Joe was able to get with the contact and get the lights back on after a brief cool down period. Evidently the lights can be controlled by laptop remotely. Someone must have pulled the plug at 9:30 not knowing that we had a 10 pm commitment. The corps rolled with the punches though. The time for the lights was extended till 10:15.The staff had the corps grab water and prepare for the run when the stadium lights returned. The run was really good and even with the interruption the Crossmen performed at a high level to the delight of the folks that stayed to watch. We had a pleasant visit from Harry Malles. Harry lives close by. He has a long history with the corps as a donor, a driver and 14 year volunteer during the 90's and early 00's. Harry has not missed a year of support even though the corps made the move to Texas. He just can't do the driving anymore. The Crossmen are still his kids. Harry took tons of photos that day and promised to give me copies to share with everyone. After snack lights were extinguished only on purpose this time. A full night's rest on the floor is just what the doctor ordered. We are hearing a lot of summer coughs the last few days. We are making a few more runs to the store for cough medicine also. This is not unusual at this point of the season. We will be taking more folks to the clinic to be checked out until it passes. Good night Crossmen! Rest up for the last regional of 2013!
