2013 Crossmen Protest Tour

Day 1, Friday June 14th
Crossmen Protest Tour Starts Off With Successful But Wet MMX

Crossmen 2013 started the season with a great turnout for our annual MMX kick off event. Despite early evening thunder, lightning and then steady rain the many eager Crossmen supporters funneled through the gate. With two weeks of radio promotion on ESPN and 550 KTSA radio, a June 10th television performance on San Antonio's WOIA News 4, Club Unity Ticket Promotion and the 550 KTSA Flag Day National Anthem performance the event was set up for success. You can check out the News 4 footage at . Thanks to Cleto Rodriguez and the entire News 4 Team for the awesome coverage!

The NEISD Blossom Athletic Center folks are an awesome group. They really helped us pull the event off despite the weather challenges. After the lightning detector gave us the all clear for the rest of the evening we started the scaled down event 20 minutes after the originally scheduled 7:30 PM start. The Navy's NOIC Choir started the evenings performance with their beautiful rendition of our National Anthem. They received a warm welcome from the crowd and the crowd's approval after their performance. The Crossmen eXperience Day Camp atttendees were up next with their prospective Crossmen sections. The front ensemble and guard sections did not perform due to the persistent rainfall and the risk of damaging electronics and injury.
Additionally, Crossmen and Contempo Leadership team up each Crossmen spring training to host area drum majors and band leadership for a Drum Major  & Leadership eXperience Camp (DMX). Kara Alvarez-Calderon does an excellent job over the course of the 4 day camp using the Crossmen as her case study group for the camp attendees. The thrill for the camp attendees has to be having the opportunity to conduct the Crossmen in front of their families. I really enjoyed meeting the DMX attendees and spending a few minutes with them conducting a Q & A session about drum majors and drum corps from the director's perspective. They are bright young people that will do an excellent job for their band programs.

The First ever live DCI sanctioned DrumLine Battle was next up. Genesis and the Guardians put on a great show for the crowd and the audience responded with their approval. Mark Purnell was the ringmaster with Crossmen Percussion Caption Head Tim Green and Tenor Tech Josh King filling out the balance of the three judge panel. After a few moments of deliberation Genesis was declared the Champion! The Zildjian Company sponsored the unique trophy. This DCI initiative has legs. It is going to be a great way to foster growth for DCI and the drum corps activity. The barrier to entry is low and the audience appeal is high! The Crossmen organization is proud to have hosted the first of its kind.

The Crossmen minus the front ensemble and guard performed the final act of the evening. The crowd loved the 2013 production, "Protest". We have another audience friendly show. It will be great to get this on the field in the competitive DCI environment.

After the MMX event, the DCI video folks including Tom Blair taped the DCI DrumLine Battle promo. Mark Purnell did an excellent job encouraging the folks to stay and be part of the audience for the promo. It will be fun to view the finished product. The irony of the rain ending after the taping wasn't missed by anyone. Hopefully rain won't play to much of a role on our tour this summer! Tomorrow we load up and head for Austin!
