Fragile Tour Blog - 2012 Crossmen presented by Gotta Go Trailways.com
We are in a beautiful location today. The valley that the small town of Seth, WV lies in is narrrow and winds its way through the mountains. The hills shoot straight up from the valley giving it a Jurassic Park feel. Lots of tall trees fill in the hillsides. The sounds of the corps resonate throughout the area. We have no cell or internet service here and that lends to the feeling of isolation. We are sure that we got more done today as everyone did not have their phone to be a distraction. A lot of the local people and the band students are in the stadium watching our shortened rehearsal. We EPL and leave for the stadium in downtown Charleston. The University stadium is within view of the Capital's golden dome.
At the stadium we have another night of one eye on the weather and one eye on the warm up. It becomes obvious that we need to load everything up and go to cover. As we button up the rain starts coming down in a big way. The temperature seems to have dropped 20 degrees in a few minutes. The storm passes and I receive a phone call from Rick Valenzuela, corps director of Phantom Regiment, the host for tonight's competition. The directors hold a breif meeting with Rick and elect to go on with the show cutting out the intermission in the interest of saving time. With that adjustment the delay nets out to 30 minutes at the end. Crossmen go on one hour after our originally scheduled step off time. There is a bright full rainbow in the sky during our delayed warm ups.We are now going to perform under the lights! This corps comes alive under the lights. The crowd reaction is tremendous! They are giving us ovations throughout the show. The corps responds with more energy coming back to the audience than ever. After we complete our performance they are on their feet for an extended ovation and they are vocal! They just witnessed our best performance to date. We depart West Virginia feeling pretty good about ourselves. Time to head for Dublin, Ohio.
