Matthew Valentine - Brass Instruction

Matthew Valentine entered the drum corps activity in 2008 as a lead trumpet player for the Crossmen Drum & Bugle Corps, aging out in 2010 as the Crossmen Horn Sergeant. Immediately after aging out he joined “The Commandant’s Own” The United States Marine Drum & Bugle Corps stationed in Washington DC at Marine Barracks 8th & I, where he served from 2010 to 2014.

While serving with “The Commandant’s Own”, Matthew performed all over the United States, and around the world as a lead soprano bugler. His performances include concerts with The New York Philharmonic, the Space Shuttle Discovery’s retirement ceremony, concerts in Belleau Wood and Chateau of Vincennes-France. Also during his enlistment, he was a Marine Corps Funeral Bugler for Arlington National Cemetery and achieved the rank of Sergeant before receiving an honorable discharge 2014.

From 2007 to 2016 Matthew has taught trumpet lessons in various schools in several cities across the nation including San Antonio, San Marcos, Austin, Fairfax VA, Washington DC, and Baltimore MD. He has also been a visual and music tech for Robinson Secondary School in Fairfax VA, and taught beginning trumpet classes at Tejeda Middle School in San Antonio.

Matthew is currently finishing a degree in music education at Texas State University in addition to being a music and visual tech for the Texas State Bobcat Marching Band since 2014, where he was the Drum Major in 2009. He studied with trumpet professors Jack Laumer and Dr. Keith Winking, studied conducting with Dr. Jaclyn Hartenberger and is currently studying conducting with Dr. Caroline Beatty and Dr. Carolyn Watson.
